New Cult Canon returns to Music Box Theatre with the demented Death Wish 3, featuring special guest Alex Winter!

A great event just got greater.

On February 2^nd, the New Cult Canon series returns to the Music Box Theatre in Chicago with 1985’s Death Wish 3, the sublimely insane second sequel to Charles Bronson’s reactionary 1974 vigilante hit. The screening itself is exciting enough—and reports of a “gorgeous” print make it even more so—but we’re upping the ante this time around: Alex Winter, best known as Bill S. Preston Esq. from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and co-director/star of the 1993 cult comedy Freaked, will be joining us as a special guest. Winter’s role as one of the “creeps” that terrorize an urban neighborhood in Death Wish 3 was one of his earliest screen appearances, and he’ll be sharing his insight into the production of this very strange and very deranged movie.

Great night yakking with Matt and Brendan of Bagged and Boarded. Good to see the venerable Kevin Smith and Scott Moser again. The Smodcastle itself is really pretty amazing. Smith and the guys bought a space in Hollywood’s theater row, renovated it and turned it into a slick man-cave with a great vibe. Doing a podcast before a live audience is absolutely the way to fly. Was like being on a f*cked up Prairie Home Companion, with Smith presiding like a po-mo G. Keillor. His double-act with Moser is even funnier live. T’was an enriching night at the the-ater…

Talking to the guys about going back to host a night of screenings; Idiot Box and Freaked. So watch this space…

Thom’s Springsteen movie rocks Toronto

This movie is so much more than an archival examination of one of the greatest albums in rock history. It’s a piece of art, an exploration of the creative process, a worm’s eye view of a young artist with a huge amount at stake, hurling himself and his band members towards greater and deeper levels of expression. It’s a helluva journey. Great work TZ!
